Basic strategy is the mathematically correct way to play every hand against the dealer’s up-card. The chart below covers a 4-8 deck game where the dealer stands on soft 17 and doubling after a split is allowed. Learning it cold is the essential first step to beating blackjack.

Additional Basic Strategy Rules

  1. Never take insurance.
  2. Always stand on hard 17 or higher.
  3. Always stand on A8, A9, A10, and 10-10.
  4. Always play 5-5 as a 10 (never split it).
  5. Always split Aces.
